Ezetimibe is a prescription medication that lowers cholesterol in a different way than statins. Instead of blocking cholesterol production in the liver, ezetimibe works in the small intestine to reduce the amount of cholesterol your body absorbs. It is often prescribed alone or added to a statin when diet and exercise are not enough to reach cholesterol goals. Ezetimibe is the generic version of the brand-name drug Zetia and is taken as one 10mg tablet daily.

High LDL cholesterol (primary hyperlipidemia)
High cholesterol not controlled by statins alone (combination therapy)
Mixed hyperlipidemia (with fenofibrate)
Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (with atorvastatin or simvastatin)
Homozygous sitosterolemia (high plant sterols)
Ezetimibe 10mg Dosage
Take 1 tablet (10 mg) by mouth once daily, with or without food.
May be taken at the same time as a statin; take at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after a bile acid sequestrant.

Warnings & Interactions
Do not use with a statin during pregnancy or while breastfeeding
Contraindicated with a statin in patients with active liver disease or unexplained elevated liver enzymes
Risk of muscle injury (myopathy/rhabdomyolysis) increases when combined with a statin or fibrate
Not recommended with fibrates other than fenofibrate
Cyclosporine can increase ezetimibe levels; use with caution

Moderate to severe liver impairment: use not recommended
