Hydrochlorothiazide is a prescription thiazide diuretic, commonly called a water pill, sold under the brand name Microzide. It works by helping the kidneys remove excess salt and water from the body through urine. This lowers blood pressure and reduces swelling caused by fluid buildup. Hydrochlorothiazide is one of the most widely prescribed blood pressure medications in the United States and may be used alone or with other antihypertensive drugs.

High blood pressure (hypertension)
Edema from congestive heart failure
Edema from liver cirrhosis
Edema from kidney disorders, including nephrotic syndrome

Hydrochlorothiazide 25mg Dosage
Hypertension: 25 mg by mouth once daily; may increase to 50 mg daily if needed.
Edema: 25–100 mg by mouth once daily or in divided doses; may be given every other day or 3–5 days per week.
