What Is Losartan 100mg?
Losartan is a prescription blood pressure medication in the angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) class, sold under the brand name Cozaar. It works by blocking a hormone that narrows blood vessels, helping vessels relax so blood pressure comes down. Unlike amlodipine, which is a calcium channel blocker, losartan targets the renin-angiotensin system — which is why the two are often compared and sometimes prescribed together. Losartan is also used to protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes and to reduce stroke risk in certain patients with high blood pressure.
What Does Losartan 100mg Treat?
High blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children 6 years and older
Reduction of stroke risk in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy
Diabetic nephropathy (kidney disease) in type 2 diabetes with elevated protein in the urine
Often used with other blood pressure medicines, such as amlodipine or diuretics
Losartan 100mg Dosage
Hypertension: 50 mg by mouth once daily; may increase to 100 mg once daily based on blood pressure response.
Diabetic nephropathy: 50 mg by mouth once daily; increase to 100 mg once daily as needed.
Stroke risk reduction (hypertension with LVH): 50 mg by mouth once daily; titrate up to 100 mg once daily, often with hydrochlorothiazide.
