What Is Losartan 50mg?
Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that relaxes blood vessels so blood can flow more easily, which lowers blood pressure. It is often compared with amlodipine, a calcium channel blocker — the two work differently and are frequently prescribed together for blood pressure that needs more than one medication. Losartan is also approved to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy, and to protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes and protein in the urine. It is taken as a once-daily tablet, with or without food.
What Does Losartan 50mg Treat?
High blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children 6 years and older
Reduction of stroke risk in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy
Diabetic nephropathy (kidney disease) in type 2 diabetes with elevated urine protein
Often combined with other antihypertensives, such as amlodipine or a diuretic, when additional blood pressure control is needed
Losartan 50mg Dosage
Hypertension: 50 mg by mouth once daily; usual range 25–100 mg daily in 1–2 doses.
Stroke risk reduction (hypertension with LVH): start 50 mg once daily; may add hydrochlorothiazide and/or increase to 100 mg daily.
Diabetic nephropathy: 50 mg once daily; may increase to 100 mg once daily based on blood pressure response.
