Erythromycin opth 0.5% ointment is a topical antibiotic medication applied to the surface of the eye. It belongs to the macrolide class of antibiotics and works by stopping the growth of susceptible bacteria. It is FDA-approved to treat superficial ocular infections such as bacterial conjunctivitis and to prevent ophthalmia neonatorum in newborns. Because it treats bacterial infections only, it will not help viral or fungal eye conditions.

Erythromycin Opth 0.5% Ointment Dosage
Adults: Apply a ribbon of ointment (approx. 1 cm) to the affected eye(s) up to 6 times daily, depending on severity of infection.
Newborn prophylaxis: Apply a 1 cm ribbon to each lower conjunctival sac once shortly after birth.
