Polymyxin B sulfate and trimethoprim ophthalmic solution is a combination antibiotic eye drop sold under the brand name Polytrim. It pairs polymyxin B, which disrupts bacterial cell membranes, with trimethoprim, which blocks bacterial folic acid production, giving coverage against a broad range of common eye pathogens. It is used for surface (external) bacterial infections of the eye and eyelids, most often bacterial conjunctivitis. It is not effective against viral or fungal eye infections and requires a prescription in the U.S.

Serious side effects

- No improvement or worsening infection after several days

Do not use if allergic to polymyxin B, trimethoprim, or any ingredient
For topical ophthalmic use only; not for injection into the eye
Stop use and contact your provider if hypersensitivity or worsening symptoms occur
Prolonged use may lead to overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi
Do not touch the dropper tip to the eye or any surface to avoid contamination
Remove contact lenses during treatment for an active eye infection unless your provider advises otherwise
Not studied for safety in infants under 2 months of age
