Latanoprost Ophth. Soln. 0.005% is a topical eye drop that belongs to a class of medications called prostaglandin analogs. It works by increasing the outflow of fluid (aqueous humor) from the eye, which lowers intraocular pressure. Elevated eye pressure is a major risk factor for optic nerve damage and vision loss in glaucoma. Latanoprost is the generic version of Xalatan and requires a prescription in the United States.

Common side effects
- Eye redness (conjunctival hyperemia)
- Eye irritation, burning, or stinging
- Blurred vision
- Itching of the eye
- Feeling of something in the eye (foreign body sensation)
- Darkening and thickening of eyelashes
- Gradual darkening of iris (eye color) pigmentation
- Darkening of eyelid skin
Serious side effects
Stop taking this medication and seek medical attention right away if you experience:
- Eye pain or significant vision changes
- Signs of eye infection (discharge, swelling, increasing redness)
- Macular edema (swelling in the retina), especially in aphakic or pseudophakic patients
- Eye inflammation (iritis/uveitis) or worsening of existing inflammation
- Severe allergic reaction (rash, swelling of face or eyes, difficulty breathing)
- Reactivation of herpetic keratitis (herpes eye infection)
Warnings & Interactions
May cause permanent darkening of iris (eye color); change may not be noticeable for months to years
Eyelash and eyelid skin changes are possible and may be reversible after stopping
Use with caution in patients with a history of eye inflammation (iritis/uveitis) or herpetic keratitis
Use with caution in patients with risk factors for macular edema
Remove contact lenses before instilling; wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting
If using more than one eye drop, separate administrations by at least 5 minutes
Do not touch the dropper tip to the eye or any surface to avoid contamination
