What Is Valacyclovir 500mg?
Valacyclovir is a prescription antiviral medication and the generic form of Valtrex. Once absorbed, it converts to acyclovir, which slows the growth and spread of herpes viruses in the body. Valacyclovir does not cure herpes infections, but it can shorten outbreaks, ease symptoms, and reduce how often outbreaks occur. It is taken by mouth as a tablet, typically with or without food.

Cold sores (herpes labialis) in adults and children 12 and older
Genital herpes — initial episodes in adults
Genital herpes — recurrent episodes in adults
Genital herpes — daily suppressive therapy in adults

Chickenpox (varicella) in children 2 to under 18 years
Valacyclovir 500mg Dosage
Cold sores: 2 g PO every 12 hours x 2 doses (1 day)
Genital herpes (initial): 1 g PO twice daily x 10 days; (recurrent): 500 mg PO twice daily x 3 days; (suppression): 1 g PO once daily
Shingles: 1 g PO three times daily x 7 days
