It reduces the buildup of inflammatory cells that respond to uric acid crystals in joints, easing pain and swelling during a flare. Colchicine is also FDA-approved to prevent gout flares and to treat familial Mediterranean fever, an inherited inflammatory condition. It is available as a 0.6mg tablet under the brand name Colcrys and requires a prescription in the United States.

Colchicine 0.6mg Dosage
Gout flare: 1.2 mg (2 tablets) by mouth at first sign of flare, then 0.6 mg (1 tablet) 1 hour later; max 1.8 mg over 1 hour
Gout prophylaxis: 0.6 mg by mouth once or twice daily; max 1.2 mg/day
FMF (adults): 1.2–2.4 mg by mouth daily in 1 or 2 divided doses
