Sumatriptan is a prescription medication in the triptan class, also known by the brand name Imitrex. It is used to treat migraine attacks once they have started — it is not intended to prevent migraines or reduce how often they occur. Sumatriptan works by activating serotonin (5-HT1) receptors, which narrows swollen blood vessels around the brain and blocks pain signals associated with migraine. Many people find it relieves headache pain as well as migraine-related nausea and sensitivity to light and sound.
