It works by blocking aldosterone, a hormone that causes the body to retain salt and water, helping the body remove excess fluid without losing potassium. Doctors prescribe spironolactone for heart failure, high blood pressure, fluid retention (edema), and primary hyperaldosteronism. It is available as a generic tablet and under the brand name Aldactone.

Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (NYHA class III–IV)
High blood pressure (hypertension)
Edema associated with liver cirrhosis
Edema associated with nephrotic syndrome

Spironolactone 50mg Dosage
Heart failure: 25 mg by mouth once daily; may increase to 50 mg once daily if tolerated.
Hypertension: 25–100 mg by mouth daily, in single or divided doses.
Edema: 100 mg by mouth daily (range 25–200 mg), in single or divided doses.
